Undisputed Legal Inc. is a New York corporation headquartered at One World Trade Center, 85th Floor, New York, NY 10007. We provide service of process, court filing, document retrieval, skip tracing, investigations, and related legal-support services throughout the United States and in more than 120 countries.

This page identifies our corporate registrations, applicable process-serving licenses, professional authorizations, and bonding information.

Requirements governing service of process vary by jurisdiction and may depend on the type of legal proceeding, the documents being served, and the qualifications of the individual performing service.

Our process servers perform service under the laws and court rules applicable to each assignment, and where the law assigns a particular paper to a sheriff, marshal or other officer, we coordinate service through that officer. Corporate registration, process-serving agency licensing, and individual process-server authorization are separate legal requirements and are addressed accordingly below.

Process serving licenses, registrations and bonds

New York City. Our process servers in New York City hold DCWP Process Server licenses, and Undisputed Legal Inc. holds the Process Serving Agency License issued by the New York City Department of Consumer and Worker Protection, License No. 1420758-DCA, and maintains the surety bond that license requires. The agency license covers process-serving agency activity in the five boroughs of New York City; the individual license is a separate requirement from the agency license.

New York State outside New York City. Our process servers perform service as persons authorized under the New York Civil Practice Law and Rules and any applicable local requirements, including the qualifications governing service of summonses and other initiating papers. New York State does not maintain a general statewide process-server licensing system.

New Jersey. Our process servers serve original process as competent adults who are not parties to the action, as Rule 4:4-3 of the New Jersey Court Rules permits, and other papers as the rules for that paper direct; the sheriff may also serve original process. No state license applies; our Jersey City office performs or coordinates service accordingly.

District of Columbia. Our process servers serve papers as persons who are at least 18 years old and not a party, as the Superior Court’s Civil Rule 4 permits; where the rule requires service by the United States Marshal or a special process server, our Washington office arranges it. No license applies.

Pennsylvania, Georgia, North Carolina, Ohio and Michigan. Our process servers perform service wherever the rules permit private service, including as court-appointed process servers where a court requires an appointment; where a state assigns original process or a particular paper to the sheriff or another officer, we arrange service through that officer. Requirements vary by state, court and type of proceeding, and some jurisdictions require particular methods for original process or court authorization for private service. Undisputed Legal performs or coordinates service in accordance with the rules governing each assignment.

Connecticut. Our Greenwich office arranges service through Connecticut State Marshals — the process servers Connecticut law designates for civil process under Connecticut General Statutes § 52-50 — and through constables and the other persons the statute authorizes, including indifferent persons appointed by the court where the statute permits, and performs the related work that the statute does not reserve to an officer.

Texas. Service ordered through our Houston office is performed by certified process servers, certified by the Judicial Branch Certification Commission under the rules of the Supreme Court of Texas, or, where the particular type of process requires, by sheriffs or constables or other persons the court authorizes.

Illinois. Service ordered through our Chicago office is performed by process servers authorized under 735 ILCS 5/2-202 and other applicable provisions: licensed or registered private detectives and authorized employees of private detective agencies, and private process servers specially appointed by the court as special process servers; or by the sheriff where the particular assignment requires.

California. Service ordered through our Los Angeles office is performed by registered process servers. California requires qualifying professional process servers and process-serving businesses to register under Business and Professions Code sections 22350 and following; registration is made through the appropriate county clerk, and the statutory bonding or deposit requirements apply. Undisputed Legal arranges California service through persons or entities authorized under applicable law.

Florida. Service in Florida is performed by certified process servers — court-certified process servers and sheriff-appointed special process servers under Chapter 48 of the Florida Statutes — or by the sheriff or other persons authorized for the particular type of process under Florida law. Undisputed Legal arranges service through appropriately authorized persons in accordance with Chapter 48 and applicable court rules.

Other states and countries. Where we do not maintain an office, service is performed by process servers, officers or agents who meet the requirements of the place of service, and we remain responsible to our clients for the work under our Terms and Conditions. International service is performed under the Hague Service Convention, letters rogatory or the destination country’s procedure, as the Terms describe.

Bonding

Undisputed Legal Inc. maintains the surety bonds that its licenses and registrations require. Information about our bonding is available to clients and agencies on request.

Verification

The New York City license may be verified through the Department of Consumer and Worker Protection’s public license search. Corporate standing may be verified through the New York Department of State’s corporation database and the equivalent registry in each state named above.
